Eight months after the American Civil War ended, the 13th amendment was passed. On December 6,1865 slavery and involuntary servitude were abolished. This meant that neither slavery or involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime, shall exist in the US.
The 13th amendment also led to a push for equal civil rights for African Americans and other races and ethnic groups. The amendment caused people to begin to view each others as equals instead of being more powerful than others. Of course, not everyone thinks or acts like this, but the 13th amendment caused many people's viewpoints to change.
